Movable Type Upgrade to 7.2, 6.5.3, or 6.3.11 Strongly Recommended

On February 6, 2020, Six Apart announced the release of Movable Type 7.2.0. This new version of Movable Type supersedes Movable Type 7.1.4, which was released in November. Here is After6 Services’ advice regarding Movable Type upgrade:

After6 Services strongly recommends upgrading to Movable Type 7.2.0 when possible. The Movable Type 7.2 upgrade contains bug fixes and security fixes.

If you want After6 to perform a Movable Type upgrade for you, please visit the Movable Type Upgrade Service page on our website.

If you are still using a version of Movable Type prior to 7.1.4, read on for our recommendations.

Users of Movable Type 6 should be running Movable Type 6.5.3 or 6.3.11.  Movable Type Version 6.5.3 is a security and bug-fix release that was designed to close vulnerabilities in all previous versions of Movable Type 6.5.  Please refer to the Movable Type 6.5.3 release notes for more details.

Movable Type 6.3.11 is the latest release for the Movable Type 6 series of releases. It is a security and bug-fix release. Please refer to Movable Type 6.3.11 release notes for more details.

The primary difference between Movable Type 6.3 and Movable Type 6.5 is that Movable Type 6.5 is more compatible with Movable Type 7 and also requires a paid, annual license. Movable Type 6.3.11 is structured as Movable Type 6 and 5 have been structured, and currently does not require a paid, annual license. Please note that Six Apart has advised its users that Movable Type 6.3 will reach end of life on May 16, 2020.

Movable Type 3.x, 4.x, 5.0x, and 5.1.x are reminded that these versions have reached End of Life. They are no longer supported by Six Apart. After6 Services will only provide support by special contractual arrangement.

We encourage all Movable Type customers who are still running these deprecated versions of Movable Type to move forward in one of three ways:

  1. Migrate to another Content Management System, such as WordPress.  After6 now provides WordPress services, and has been migrating some of its customers from Movable Type to WordPress.  WordPress has no license fee, and has many more modern third-party plugins and themes than does Movable Type 6.  We welcome the opportunity to do a migration analysis for you.  Contact us at customer.service [at] after6services.com for more information.
  2. Upgrade to Movable Type 6.5.3.  If you need the Movable Type Pro functionality, you will need to purchase a Movable Type Pro Unlimited license at a cost of $499.00, which must be renewed annually.  After6 will handle the whole process for you, if you wish.  See Movable Type Upgrade Service for more information.
